A large number of B cells inhabit the marginal zones (MZ) of the spleen, where they maintain steady contact with recirculating antigens in the blood. These lymphocytes respond rapidly to bacteria by mobilizing and differentiating into extensive clusters of antibody-producing plasma cells.
