Sci. STKE, 15 March 2005 PERSPECTIVESAlone at Last! New Functions for Ca2+ Channel ß Subunits?Matthieu Rousset, Thierry Cens, and Pierre Charnet* Neurobiologie Moléculaire, CRBM FRE 2593, CNRS, 1919 Route de Mende, 34293 Montpellier Cedex, France. Summary: New functions for voltage-gated Ca2+ channel auxiliary ß subunits have recently been identified. These functions appear to be regulated by the ß subunit alone, independently of any effects on the Ca2+ influx; hence, the ß subunit may not be truly "auxiliary" and may play more fundamental roles in Ca2+ homeostasis or gene regulation. These new findings raise important questions and open new, exciting research avenues. *Corresponding author. E-mail: pierre.charnet{at}crbm.cnrs.fr
