Kiberstis Science, AAAS, Washington, DC 20005, USA Caloric dietary restriction prolongs life span in a variety of organisms, and in mammals, the resultant lowering of core body temperature has been offered as one potential explanation. Conti et al. generated transgenic mice that overexpress mitochondrial uncoupling protein 2 in hypocretin-producing neurons within the hypothalamus, which lowers core body temperature by about 0.5ºC.
