Abstract:
This is a conversation with Lan Huang about a Research Article published in the 7 December 2010 issue of Science Signaling. Wang and colleagues report that oxidative stress triggers separation of the catalytic and regulatory portions of the yeast proteasome, thus enabling the catalytic core to switch from degrading ubiquitinated proteins to degrading potentially toxic oxidized proteins. This response was also observed in human cells, suggesting that this mechanism for surviving oxidative stress might be conserved throughout eukaryotes.
