Abstract: This Podcast features an interview with David Kirsch and Chang-Lung Lee, authors of a Research Article published in the 24 July 2012 issue of Science Signaling. Kirsch and Lee studied radiation-induced injury to the heart, focusing specifically on the vasculature in the heart and the role of the transcription factor p53. Previous studies had indicated that p53 promotes damage to the heart after various types of injury and stress, but Kirsch and Lee found that p53 protects cardiac endothelial cells—and thus the entire organ—from radiation-induced damage. The authors discuss these findings in the context of heart damage associated with radiation therapy in human patients
