Abstract: This Podcast features an interview with Kenneth Irvine and Gongping Sun, authors of a Research Article that appears in the 10 September 2013 issue of Science Signaling. Signaling through the Hippo pathway suppresses cell proliferation and promotes apoptosis by preventing nuclear accumulation of the transcriptional coactivator Yorkie (Yki). The Hippo pathway plays a role in regulating tissue growth during development and wound healing and is misregulated in some cancers. Sun and Irvine report that Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) signaling promotes the nuclear accumulation of Yki during tissue regeneration in fruit flies, thus antagonizing the antiproliferative effects of Hippo signaling.
