Sci. STKE, 18 September 2001 PERSPECTIVESFat Hedgehogs, Slower or Richer?Marcel van den Heuvel The author is in the MRC Functional Genetics Unit, Department of Human Anatomy and Genetics, University of Oxford, South Parks Road, Oxford, UK, OX1 3QX. E-mail: marcel.vandenheuvel{at}human-anatomy.oxford.ac.uk Abstract: Hedgehog (Hh) is a protein ligand that is involved in early developmental patterning. The activity of Hh is controlled by cleavage events and various posttranslational modifications, including the addition of cholesterol and palmitic acid. Van den Heuvel describes how acylation of Hh affects the activity of the protein and explores the differences in activity between the vertebrate sonic hedgehog (Shh) and Drosophila Hh.
