Abstract:
The sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus is a model organismfor study of the genomic control circuitry underlying embryonicdevelopment. We examined the complete repertoire of genes expressedin the S. purpuratus embryo, up to late gastrula stage, by meansof high-resolution custom tiling arrays covering the whole genome.We detected complete spliced structures even for genes knownto be expressed at low levels in only a few cells. At least11,000 to 12,000 genes are used in embryogenesis. These includemost of the genes encoding transcription factors and signalingproteins, as well as some classes of general cytoskeletal andmetabolic proteins, but only a minor fraction of genes encodingimmune functions and sensory receptors. Thousands of small asymmetrictranscripts of unknown function were also detected in intergenicregions throughout the genome. The tiling array data were usedto correct and authenticate several thousand gene models duringthe genome annotation process.
