Regulation of Adaptive Immunity by the Innate Immune System
Akiko Iwasaki1,*, and
Ruslan Medzhitov1,2,*
Abstract:
Twenty years after the proposal that pattern recognition receptorsdetect invasion by microbial pathogens, the field of immunologyhas witnessed several discoveries that have elucidated receptorsand signaling pathways of microbial recognition systems andhow they control the generation of T and B lymphocyte–mediatedimmune responses. However, there are still many fundamentalquestions that remain poorly understood, even though sometimesthe answers are assumed to be known. Here, we discuss some ofthese questions, including the mechanisms by which pathogen-specificinnate immune recognition activates antigen-specific adaptiveimmune responses and the roles of different types of innateimmune recognition in host defense from infection and injury.
