Immunology TRPM7 and T Cell Development

The transient receptor potential melastatin-like 7 (TRPM7) protein is a membrane ion channel that conducts Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions. Its physiological role has been proposed to be essential for Mg2+ uptake and homeostasis of Mg2+ concentrations in whole animals. To examine the physiological roles of the channel in vivo, Jin et al. studied mice in which the channel was specifically depleted from the T cell lineage. The results suggest that TRPM7 is required for a developmentally important step in thymic maturation of T cells.
