Chromatin The Ups and Downs of Transcription
Eukaryotic DNA is packaged with histones into nucleosomes and forms a chromatin structure that can interfere with binding by transcription factors. Histone acetylases and deacetylases are enzyme complexes that function in transcriptional activation and repression, respectively. Wang et al. examine the binding of the histone deacetylase Hos2p to target genes using chromatin immunoprecipitation assays. They show that Hos2p associates with the coding regions of genes only when they are transcriptionally active. Hence, histone deacetylases function in both activation and repression.
