Organelle Biogenesis NO, More Mitochondria

The body can generate additional mitochondria, the energy-producing organelles, in response to a variety of stressors, including cold. Nisoli et al. (see the Perspective by Brown) examined found a role for nitric oxide (NO) in the process. Mitochondrial biogenesis was stimulated by NO in brown adipocytes and in cell lines. Consistent with this result, mice that had been engineered to lack endothelial NO synthase showed increased weight gain and a slower metabolic rate.
