Focus Issue: Viruses—Miniature Machiavellis of the Signaling World?

Abstract: This week’s issue of Science’s STKE, published in conjunction with a Special Issue of Science on virology, describes viral mechanisms for manipulating signaling pathways in the host cell to ensure their own replication and survival. Münter et al. focus on how viruses and other pathogens manipulate tyrosine kinase- and Rho guanosine triphosphatase-mediated pathways; Barry and Früh discuss how viruses manipulate cullin RING ubiquitin ligases to evade host defenses; and Hayward et al. compare mechanisms whereby Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and Kaposi's sarcoma associated herpesviruses (KSHV) interact with the Wnt and Notch signaling pathways. In a Review in Science, García-Sastre and Biron discuss the interplay between virus offenses and host defenses, focusing on the role of the type I interferons.
