Abstract: This Podcast features a conversation with an author of a Research Article published in the 5 July 2011 issue of Science Signaling. Yuanzheng He discusses his group’s finding that the anti-inflammatory drug chloroquine synergizes with glucocorticoids in treating symptoms of inflammatory arthritis in a mouse model. Chloroquine inhibited the lysosome, which enhanced glucocorticoid signaling by increasing the stability or abundance of the glucocorticoid receptor and other members of the nuclear receptor family. These results suggest that lysosomes are a potential target for treating autoimmune and inflammatory diseases as well as disorders caused by aberrant nuclear receptor signaling.
