Sci. Signal., 29 November 2011 PODCASTSScience Signaling Podcast: 29 November 2011Gerda E. Breitwieser1 and Annalisa M. VanHook2
1 Weis Center for Research, Geisinger Clinic, 100 N. Academy Avenue, Danville, PA 17822-2604, USA. Abstract: This Podcast features a conversation with the senior author of a Research Article published in the 22 November 2011 issue of Science Signaling. Gerda Breitwieser discusses her groups study of how signaling through the calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) increases in response to increases in the concentration of extracellular calcium. They found that CaSRs were mobilized from an intracellular pool to the plasma membrane in response to activation by calcium or other agonists, thus enabling increased and sustained CaSR signaling. This mechanism might also regulate the signaling output of other receptors that are also constantly exposed to ligands.
