Abstract:
This Podcast features a conversation with an author of a Research Article published in the 7 February 2012 issue of Science Signaling. Kathryn Taylor discusses her groups finding that the kinase CK2 promotes the formation of intracellular zinc waves that modulate cell proliferation and migration. When zinc is released from intracellular stores, it acts as a second messenger to promote the activity of tyrosine kinases that are involved in cell proliferation and migration. Taylor et al. found that the kinase CK2, which plays an important role in cell proliferation, phosphorylates the zinc channel ZIP7 to promote zinc release from the endoplasmic reticulum.
