Paradigms of Growth Control: Relation to Cdk Activation

Gloss: Early work on control of cell proliferation showed that, at least for certain cell types, two sorts of growth factors are required to cause cells to proliferate. So-called "competence factors" are needed to allow appropriate cellular response to other mitogens known as "progression factors." Olashaw and Pledger discuss the molecular basis for this phenomenon and how competence and progression factors regulate the biochemical signaling systems that regulate progression of cells through G0 and G1 phases of the cell cycle.
