The already impressive capacity of yeast to use very similar Map kinase (MAPK) signaling pathways to mediate distinct biological processes becomes even more amazing with a report from Lee and Elion. The MAPKKK/Ste11 and other downstream components were thought to be dedicated to mating and invasive growth signaling pathways and to be inactive during normal vegetative growth. The authors show that Ste11 and other components shared by the mating and invasive growth pathway also function to promote vegetative growth. Hence, yeast appear to accommodate a variety of responses by using appropriate members from a single repertoire of signaling components.
