It is known that processes such as cell migration involve adhesion of cells to the extracellular matrix via integrins. However, the integrin-mediated signaling events that help to regulate various cellular functions are still being elucidated. In his Perspective, Guan discusses new work (del Pozo et al.; Palazzo et al.) demonstrating that integrins use plasma membrane lipid rafts to regulate the targeting of Rac and Rho GTPases to the plasma membrane and their coupling to downstream effector molecules.
