This Forum on zinc signaling is dedicated to the memory of John M. Sarvey, who died of complications of pancreatic cancer on August 20, 2003. With a long-time interest in hippocampal long-term potentiation, John had more recently become interested in the role of zinc in hippocampal synaptic transmission and neurodegeneration and was actively directing research in this field at the time of his death. A delightful and engaging individual as well as an enthusiastic and inspiring colleague, John will be deeply missed by his many friends and colleagues in the zinc signaling community.
