A Correction to the Editors' Choice Summary Titled, "Common Senses" by Annalisa M. VanHook

The text as written implied that both fibroblast growth factor (FGF) ligands, NvFGFa1 and NvFGFa2, signaled through a mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascade. The data are more consistent with NvFGFa1 acting as an agonist for the FGF receptor and stimulating a MAPK cascade, whereas NvFGFa2 appears to act as an antagonist and is unlikely to stimulate a MAPK cascade. Thus, two sentences in the Editors’ Choice text are incorrect.

The following are the corrected sentences:

"…Pharmacological experiments suggested that NvFGFa1 signaled through a mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascade. … Thus, two FGFs antagonize one another to induce the apical organ and at least NvFGFa1 signals through a pathway that is very much like the canonical FGF pathway of more complex animals."

The original, incorrect sentences were:
