Wiring up the eye

Fernandes et al. show that visual development in the fly depends on signaling relayed through wrapping glial cells (see also Isaacman-Beck and Clandinin).

PHARMACOGENOMICS

Limiting the risk of Parkinson’s disease

Mittal et al. performed a small-molecule screen to identify compounds that regulate the extent of SNCA expression and found that several β2-adrenoreceptor (β2AR) agonists epigenetically reduce α-synuclein gene expression, a risk factor for Parkinson’s disease (see also Snyder).

MICROBIOTA

Gut microbes and immune signaling find their rhythm

Wang et al. report that two signals, light and gut bacteria, interact through immune signaling to regulate host metabolism and health.
