Abstract

This is a conversation with John Scott and Wei Wong, authors of a Research Article published in the 23 December 2008 issue of Science Signaling. They discuss their work showing that the scaffold protein muscle A kinase-anchoring protein (mAKAP) is important for localizing components that mediate the cellular response to hypoxia to the nuclear envelope. This compartmentalization of the hypoxia signaling machinery poises the hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF-1α) for action in the nucleus in response to limiting oxygen conditions.
