The FAT GNAT and the HAT (Dr. Seuss Does Transcription?)

Despite years of research elucidating transcriptional mechanisms, only recently has the role of higher-order chromatin structure been evaluated for its role in transcriptional regulation. Several histone acetylase proteins that also modify transcription factors have been identified recently, and the biochemical characterization of these proteins is under way. Sterner and Berger review the growing literature on acetylating proteins that are involved in transcription and DNA access. This outstanding review covers the different families of acetylases (including GNATs, MYSTs, FATs, and nucleosome-acetylating native complexes) and discusses the structures and mechanisms by which these proteins accomplish their work. The role of acetylation in the function of transcriptional activators is also covered. The review by Sterner and Berger appears to be nearly exhaustive and will no doubt serve as a benchmark review in this field.
