Chemokine Guides Neurons

Development of the mammalian cerebral cortex involves stratification of neurons into distinct layers. This process involves migration of specific neurons to their proper position. Zhu et al. report that the chemokine stromal-derived factor 1 (SDF-1) acts as a chemoattractant and specifically controls the migration of embryonic external germinal layer (EGL) neurons. In culture, embryonic, but not mature, EGL neurons were attracted to a cocultured source of SDF-1. Localization of SDF-1 and its cognate receptor to the meninges and EGL, respectively, also suggests such a guidance mechanism.
