Protecting the Vascular Wall

Atherosclerosis is characterized by aberrant growth and migration of vascular smooth muscle cells. In a study of genetically engineered mice, Boucher et al. identify LRP1 (low density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1) as an important physiological regulator that helps to keep these cells in check. The atheroprotective effect of LRP1 was traced to its ability to control signaling events involving the platelet-derived growth factor receptor.
