The correct localization of the potassium channel within the axon is essential to maintain a functional nervous system. Gu et al. now show that a motif within the T1 tetramerization domain of the Kv1 channel subunit is key to the correct localization of the channel, and that correct assembly of the Kv1 subunit with another potassium channel subunit, Kvb, is required. The T1 domain could be transplanted onto other proteins and promote their redistribution to the axon--again only if they could assemble with Kvb.
