Seven-transmembrane receptors can transduce signals in the absence of productive heterotrimeric guanosine triphosphate-binding protein (G protein) interaction. In Dictyostelium discoideum, these signals activate transcriptional, mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), and Ca2+ influx pathways, as well as ligand-stimulated phosphorylation of the receptors themselves. This Connections Map illustrates the pathways that remain active in D. discoideum carrying mutations in various G protein genes.
