This is a conversation with Alexander Hoffmann about a Research Article published in the 22 February 2011 issue of Science Signaling. Hoffmann discusses his group’s report on how homodimers of the nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) p50 regulate the innate immune response. The study revealed that NF-κB homodimers compete with interferon regulatory factors (IRFs) for binding to guanine-rich interferon response elements (G-IREs) to restrict the activation of antiviral genes to only the appropriate stimuli.
