This Podcast features a conversation with the senior author of a Research Article published in the 26 July 2011 issue of Science Signaling. Sara Courtneidge discusses her group’s screen to identify compounds that affect the formation of invadopodia, which are cellular projections that allow cancer cells to invade tissues. They identified a group of compounds that inhibited the cyclin-dependent kinase Cdk5 as inhibitors of invasion. Surprisingly, they also found that the chemotherapeutic agent paclitaxel increased the formation of invadopodia and promoted invasive behavior, suggesting that the use of paclitaxel might actually promote metastases in patients.
