Abstract

This Podcast features a conversation with the senior author of a Research Article published in the 6 September 2011 issue of Science Signaling. During the inflammatory response, leukocytes migrate out of circulation and into injured or infected tissues. Although some inflammation is important for healing and fighting infection, chronic inflammation may cause tissue damage and disease. The integrin CD11b/CD18 is required for leukocytes to migrate to sites of injury, but efforts to reduce recruitment by inhibiting signaling through this integrin have not been successful in clinical trials. Vineet Gupta discusses his group’s finding that activating signaling through CD11b/CD18 reduced leukocyte recruitment to sites of injury in mice and may be an effective strategy for developing human therapeutics.
