Abstract

This Podcast features an interview with Nancy Hynes, senior author of a Research Article that appears in the 10 June 2014 issue of Science Signaling, about a copper-binding enzyme that promotes metastasis of breast cancer cells. MacDonald et al. report that human breast cancer cells lacking the copper-dependent oxidase Memo exhibited reduced migratory and invasive behavior both in culture and in xenografts. Memo stimulated the production of reactive oxygen species and the oxidation of proteins involved in cell migration. High abundance of Memo in tumor samples from breast cancer patients correlated with metastasis and poor prognosis. Because Memo requires copper for its enzymatic activity, drugs that chelate copper may be effective at inhibiting metastasis in patients with tumors that have a high abundance of Memo.
