ONLINE COVER This week features a Research Article that describes how mice lacking the cGMP effector VASP have a higher metabolism because of an increase in brown adipose tissue and the "browning" of white adipose tissue, a process in which white adipocytes acquire the characteristics of brown adipocytes. The image shows a cross section of white adipose tissue from VASP–/– mice stained for UCP-1, a protein that is highly abundant in brown adipose tissue.
