This month’s articles show how Plasmodium by-products cause bone loss and how citrullination of an NF-κB subunit enhances inflammatory responses.

Plasmodium leftovers cause bone loss

Lee et al. show that Plasmodium by-products induce an inflammatory response in the bone marrow that leads to bone loss in patients that have recovered from malaria.

PADs inflame arthritis

Sun et al. show that the NF-κB subunit p65 is citrullinated, enhancing its entry into the nucleus, where it induces the expression of genes encoding proinflammatory cytokines.
