Gilman to Form Alliance for Cell Signaling

The man who introduced us to G proteins looks to have another trick up his sleeve--a "big science" approach to signal transduction that may reveal the big picture of how networks of signaling pathways are coordinated to control physiological processes. In the news this week, Al Gilman of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center has initiated a $10 million a year project to systematically explore signal transduction mechanisms in cardiac myocytes and B lymphocytes. Under the proposal currently under consideration at the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, large-scale screening of protein-protein interactions in a number of core labs would generate leads that would be immediately posted on the Internet, allowing scientists anywhere to benefit from the work. Just keeping track of the data will be a project in itself. A database, not unlike STKE's Connections Map, is envisaged with highly detailed "molecule pages" that provide a comprehensive compilation of the biochemical properties of each signaling component.
