Acetylation of proteins was originally identified for histones, but now many proteins are being identified as substrates for this type of posttranslational modification. Acetylase substrates now include transcription factors, nuclear import factors, and cytoskeletal proteins. Kouzarides provides a succinct overview of the enzymes and their specificity and regulation, as well as a discussion of substrates and functional consequences of protein acetylation.
