Doing Double Duty

Regulation of the cell cycle involves the nedd8 ubiquitin-like modification of key proteins. Kurz et al. now find that these modifications are also important in controlling the cytoskeleton in Caenorhabditis elegans embryos. Nedd 8 conjugation inhibits microfilament contraction in the cell cortex during pronuclear migration and again during cytokinesis. In addition, katanin, a microtubule-severing complex, is degraded after neddylation at the end of meiosis.
