Online Cover This week features a Research Article that characterizes the properties of an engineered form of type I interferon (IFN) called IFN-1ant. Whereas natural IFN stimulates an antiviral response, it also inhibits immune cells from proliferating, which complicates its use in patients. IFN-1ant showed effective antiviral responses, but it did not prevent cells from proliferating, a selective effect that might make it a more effective therapy for treating viral infections.
