Online Cover This week features a Research Article that characterizes the dual roles of signaling by the receptor NOTCH in joints in mice. Transient NOTCH signaling maintained healthy joints, whereas sustained NOTCH signaling resulted in an osteoarthritis-like condition. Furthermore, in the context of joint injury, transient NOTCH signaling exacerbated disease, suggesting that the contribution of NOTCH to joint health and maintenance depends on signal strength and duration, as well as context.
