Changing properties of interneurons

Although neuronal identity is determined early during development, neurons exhibit activity-dependent changes such as those that result in synaptic plasticity. Dehorter et al. found that the abundance of the transcription factor Er81 altered the properties of fast-spiking interneurons postmitotically and that these neurons showed activity-dependent changes in their properties. Er81 controlled the properties of these interneurons by regulating the expression of genes encoding a potassium channel subunit.
