AB Multiple mechanisms exist for inducing increases in intracellular calcium concentrations [Ca2+]i. Mignen and Shuttleworth have identified a noncapacitative calcium entry pathway that is stimulated by arachidonic acid (IARC). The current measured using whole-cell patch-clamp techniques exhibited several characteristics that distinguished this calcium flux from capacitative store-operated calcium currents (ISOC): IARC was independent of depletion of intracellular calcium stores, was insensitive to changes in intracellular pH, and was additive with ISOC. The authors have characterized another mechanism for regulating intracellular calcium that appears to be stimulated in response to changes in the amount of intracellular arachidonic acid.
