Vidal discusses strategies for using genomic information to change how scientific questions are addressed. He suggests that data from expression profiling, structural and biochemical genomics, protein interaction mapping, protein localization studies, and global gene knockout analysis need to be integrated into functional maps, and these should be organized into a biological atlas analogous to geographical maps and atlases. He emphasizes that the information needs to be available to all researchers along with tools to aid in the analysis. His view is very positive, yet still presents the pitfalls of global approaches to biological questions. M. Vidal, A biological atlas of functional maps. Cell 104, 333-339 (2001). [Online Journal]
