By combining two existing technologies in a new way, Ji et al. developed a library of antisense RNAs that are inducible with tetracycline, which means the respective genes can be turned on and off not just in vitro but also in infected mice. The roles played by specific genes in bacterial growth and behavior can be examined in complex ecologies, such as at the site of infection, and thereby, clinically relevant drug or vaccine targets can be identified.
