Signal.2010 Nov 09; 3 AB - This is a conversation with Doug Fields about a Research Article published in the 5 October 2010 issue of Science Signaling. Fields and Ni report that axonal swelling allows neurons to communicate with glia by releasing ATP through volume-activated anion channels. This nonvesicular, nonsynaptic form of communication may mediate activity-dependent communication between neurons and neighboring cells under normal conditions and may play a role in disease.
