Fields and Ni report that axonal swelling allows neurons to communicate with glia by releasing ATP through volume-activated anion channels. This nonvesicular, nonsynaptic form of communication may mediate activity-dependent communication between neurons and neighboring cells under normal conditions and may play a role in disease.
